TLDR: Ponte is comfortable, structured, forgiving, and ridiculously versatile. If you’re looking for a knit that behaves itself on the cutting table and looks polished when you wear it, this is your fabric.
--
Ponte is the knit fabric that makes sewing knits feel almost suspiciously easy.
A double-knit fabric, Ponte is made with two layers of knitting that interlock, giving it more structure and stability than a typical jersey knit. It has comfortable stretch without feeling flimsy, holds its shape beautifully, and best of all for sewists, it doesn’t curl at the edges.
Our Ponte is a blend of 65% rayon, 30% nylon, and 5% spandex, giving you that perfect combination of softness, durability, stretch, and recovery. It’s also wonderfully wrinkle-resistant, making it a great choice for garments that need to look polished while still feeling like pajamas. (We won't tell.)
Why We Love It
Ponte gives you the comfort and ease of a knit with the structure and polish you usually associate with wovens. Because it’s stable and easy to handle, it’s also a fantastic choice if you’re new to sewing knits.
Use it for:
- Dresses: Sheath, fit-and-flare, wrap, and other structured styles
- Trousers: Ponte makes wonderfully comfortable, polished pants
- Skirts: Especially pencil and fitted styles
- Tops & Blazers: Perfect when you want structure without sacrificing stretch
- Fitted Jackets: A great option for soft tailoring
And because Ponte is so stable, it can sometimes work beautifully with patterns designed for lightweight wovens—particularly styles where the fabric's stretch can replace the need for a zipper or other closure. Just be sure to check the pattern's fabric requirements and stretch percentage before making the leap.
