Join Carly for a hands-on introduction to sewing knit fabrics. This 4 hour class is designed to demystify stretch materials and help you build confidence using your own sewing machine. You’ll work step-by-step through constructing a knit tank top (The Luna Tank by Helen's Closet) , focusing on techniques that apply to a wide range of future projects.
We’ll cover everything from machine setup to finishing details, so you leave not only with a completed garment but also the knowledge to keep sewing knits on your own.
A large-format A0 printed pattern will be provided for each student who registers.
By the end of this class, you’ll be able to:
- Choose the right needles for different knit fabrics
- Adjust your sewing machine settings for stretch materials
- Measure and evaluate stretch percentage and fabric recovery
- Understand and apply negative ease in garment sewing
- Sew and apply binding to armholes and necklines
- Confidently troubleshoot common knit sewing challenges
This class is ideal for adventurous beginners who already have some sewing experience. You should:
- Know how to take body measurements and read a sewing pattern
- Be comfortable using your own sewing machine (basic operation)
- Have completed a few woven fabric projects (knit experience not required!)
Please come prepared with:
- Knit fabric suitable for your size (yardage based on the pattern)
- Matching thread and a filled bobbin
- Stretch or jersey needles (a variety pack recommended)
- Your sewing machine
- Highlighter
- Optional: tracing paper (if you’d like to preserve multiple sizes)
